Billboard Project Logo

Goal Amount: $1100
Amount collected: $2100

In early January of 2001, the BillyHeads decided they wanted to do something to show their appreciation for Billy. On a whim, a billboard was suggested by Jim Chapman. The original idea was to have the billboard erected in Billy's hometown of Hope Valley for his birthday. However, as the idea was investigated, it was decided that was not the best course of action.

Eventually, it was decided that the billboard would be made in time for Billy's arrival at Fan Fair that June. Norm Bryant contacted Lamar Advertising in Nashville and was given a quote of $1100, including $800 for the month of renting the billboard, and a $300 fee to cover the cost of producing the paper itself. With faith in the community, Norm wrote a personal check for the full amount of the billboard and the arrangement was made.

As we mulled over ideas of what to say on the billboard, RPM was contacted for permission to use Billy's name and image. Kelly Wright was so thrilled with the project, she offered to contact the graphic artists at Epic Records and asked that they design the billboard for us! After a web poll about what wording to use, the information was sent to RPM and forwarded to Epic, and the billboard, affectionately referred to as the "Billyboard," was born.

The first day that Billy arrived in Nashville, the Monday before Fan Fair, he was taken to see the billboard, which was located in a prime location right near Adelphia Colloseum where the nightly concerts would be held. Before they arrived, Billy spotted the billboard. "Oh, look!" he said excitedly. With a smile on their faces, Billy was told, "Yes Billy, we know. That's what we brought you here to see."

The billyboard was a resounding success, and was a great illustration of the strength of this community of fans. In fact, not only did we raise the $1100 necessary to cover the expenses, we also raised an additional $1000. After some initial deliberation, it was decided that the excess money would be donated to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Billy's name. That act began a tradition that continues into present day. Little did we know the attention the billboard and the BillyHeads would receive at that Fan Fair! We were written about on Country.com, and videotaped for a spot that ran on CMT. The billboard project began what has become a rich history of ambitious and worthwhile projects.
